Dartmouth Big Green basketball — program history

Dartmouth's basketball program dates to 1901 at the Ivy League school in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Big Green were a national power in the 1940s, reaching the 1944 NCAA Championship game. As an Ivy League school, Dartmouth does not offer athletic scholarships.

The name

The 'Big Green' nickname refers to Dartmouth's school color, which dates to the 1860s. Dartmouth has no official mascot, though an unofficial 'Keggy the Keg' mascot has appeared at games.

Signature moment

Reaching the 1944 NCAA Championship game, where Dartmouth lost to Utah in what remains the program's finest hour.

The unofficial student-created mascot 'Keggy the Keg' — a person dressed as a beer keg — has appeared at Dartmouth basketball games since 2003, despite having no official university endorsement.

The Dartmouth Big Green compete in the Ivy League and hold an all-time record of 1369–1625 (.457 winning percentage) across 125 recorded seasons dating back to 1899-00. The program has reached 2 Final Fours.
