UNC Wilmington's basketball program dates to 1948, and the coastal Carolina school competes in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks have been a regular CAA contender and occasional NCAA Tournament participant.
The Seahawks name reflects the school's coastal location in Wilmington, North Carolina, where osprey and other sea hawks are commonly seen along the Cape Fear coast.
