CCNY's basketball program dates to 1906 at the City College of New York in Manhattan. The Beavers achieved one of the most remarkable feats in college basketball history in 1950, winning both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT in the same season — the only team to ever do so. The program later dropped to Division III.
The Beavers nickname was chosen because the beaver represents industriousness and hard work, values central to the working-class students of the public City College.
Winning both the 1950 NCAA Tournament and NIT Championship in the same season, a feat that will never be repeated since teams are no longer allowed to enter both tournaments.
The 1950 championship was followed by a devastating point-shaving scandal in 1951 that led to criminal convictions for several players and effectively ended CCNY's status as a major basketball power.
The CCNY Beavers compete in the CUNY and hold an all-time record of 1355–1405 (.491 winning percentage) across 48 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06. The program has won 1 NCAA national championship (1950) and reached 1 Final Four.
