Creighton Bluejays basketball — program history
Creighton, a Jesuit university in Omaha founded in 1878, began basketball in 1907 and adopted the 'Bluejays' name in 1923 via a public contest coordinated by the Omaha Bee newspaper. Doug McDermott, nicknamed 'Dougie McBuckets,' left Creighton as the fifth-leading scorer in NCAA history with 3,150 points — all while playing for his father, coach Greg McDermott. He even relinquished his scholarship as a senior to make room for a teammate, becoming perhaps the greatest walk-on in Big East history. Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson also played basketball at Creighton.
The name
The 'Bluejays' name was selected from 200 entries in a 1923 public contest because the bird's color matched the school's blue and white colors
Signature moment
Doug McDermott's 2014 Senior Night, scoring a career-high 45 points against Providence and surpassing 3,000 career points
Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson played basketball at Creighton before his legendary pitching career, finishing as the school's third-leading scorer with 1,272 points in 1957
The Creighton Bluejays compete in the Big East and hold an all-time record of 1720–1099 (.610 winning percentage) across 106 recorded seasons dating back to 1911-12.
