Loyola Marymount Lions basketball — program history
Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles is best remembered for its revolutionary run-and-gun offense under coach Paul Westhead in the late 1980s, led by Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble. The Lions compete in the West Coast Conference and had one of the most tragic and inspiring stories in college basketball history.
The name
The Lions mascot represents courage and nobility, a fitting symbol for the Jesuit and Marymount traditions merged when the two institutions combined in 1973.
Signature moment
The 1990 NCAA Tournament run to the Elite Eight, dedicated to Hank Gathers who collapsed and died on the court during the WCC Tournament — Bo Kimble shot his first free throw left-handed in each game in tribute.
The 1989-90 Loyola Marymount team averaged 122.4 points per game, still the highest-scoring team in Division I history, running Paul Westhead's revolutionary system.
The Loyola Marymount Lions compete in the WCC and hold an all-time record of 965–1232 (.439 winning percentage) across 79 recorded seasons dating back to 1942-43.
