The University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, competes in the West Coast Conference and has a basketball tradition that includes producing NBA players and making NCAA Tournament appearances. The Tigers have been competitive in the WCC for decades.
The Tigers nickname originated in the fall of 1908, when the rugby team's black jerseys and socks with orange stripes made the players look like tigers, and was made official by the 1925 student constitution.
The 2004-05 season, when Pacific went 27-4 and a perfect 18-0 in the Big West, earned a #8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, beat No. 9 seed Pittsburgh, and fell to No. 1 seed Washington in the second round, one of the best seasons in program history.
Pacific's Alex G. Spanos Center is named after the late NFL owner who was a major benefactor of the university, connecting the school to professional sports history.
The Pacific Tigers compete in the WCC and hold an all-time record of 1052–1089 (.491 winning percentage) across 77 recorded seasons dating back to 1937-38.
