San Diego's basketball program dates to 1949, and the private Catholic university competes in the West Coast Conference. The Toreros have occasionally challenged Gonzaga and other WCC powers for conference supremacy.
The Toreros name means "bullfighters" in Spanish, reflecting San Diego's deep connection to Spanish and Mexican culture and the city's proximity to the Mexican border.
Winning the 2008 WCC Tournament to earn an automatic NCAA bid, then upsetting No. 4 seed UConn 70-69 in overtime on De'Jon Jackson's jumper with 1.2 seconds left, the program's only NCAA Tournament win.
San Diego's Jenny Craig Pavilion sits on a mesa overlooking Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, giving it one of the most beautiful arena settings in all of college basketball.
The San Diego Toreros compete in the WCC and hold an all-time record of 665–723 (.479 winning percentage) across 47 recorded seasons dating back to 1979-80.
