Seattle University's basketball program dates to 1946, and the Jesuit school returned to Division I in 2009 after competing at the NAIA and D-II levels. The Redhawks were a national power in the 1950s and 1960s, led by the great Elgin Baylor.
The Redhawks name was adopted in 2000, replacing "Chieftains." The red-tailed hawk, commonly seen in the Pacific Northwest, inspired the new mascot.

Elgin Baylor, one of the most revolutionary players in basketball history, played at Seattle University and took the small Jesuit school to the 1958 NCAA title game before becoming an NBA legend with the Lakers.
The Seattle U Redhawks compete in the WCC and hold an all-time record of 756–530 (.588 winning percentage) across 46 recorded seasons dating back to 1951-52. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
