IU Indianapolis Jaguars basketball — program history

IU Indianapolis (formerly IUPUI) joined Division I in 1998 and competes in the Horizon League. The program rebranded from IUPUI Jaguars to IU Indianapolis Jaguars in 2024 as part of a university identity consolidation. The Jaguars have been building toward consistent competitiveness in their conference.

The name

The Jaguar mascot was chosen by a campus-wide vote in 1998, coinciding with the move to Division I and giving the urban commuter campus a distinctive athletic identity.

Signature moment

George Hill starring for IUPUI from 2004 to 2008, going on to become the program's only NBA draft pick when the San Antonio Spurs selected him 26th overall in 2008, and later reaching the NBA Finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

IUPUI was one of the longest acronyms in Division I athletics, with fans and broadcasters often struggling to pronounce the five-letter abbreviation.

The IU Indianapolis Jaguars compete in the Horizon League and hold an all-time record of 357–504 (.415 winning percentage) across 28 recorded seasons dating back to 1998-99.
