Texas Longhorns basketball — program history
Texas basketball dates to 1906 at the state's flagship university, which opened in 1883. The live mascot Bevo, a Longhorn steer, has been a tradition since 1916 — the first Bevo was famously barbecued at a football banquet and reportedly the meat was tough. While Texas has historically been a football school, the basketball program produced Kevin Durant, who played just one season in 2007 before becoming one of the NBA's greatest scorers. The Longhorns have been regular NCAA Tournament participants and joined the SEC in 2024.

The Texas Longhorns compete in the SEC and hold an all-time record of 1939–1170 (.624 winning percentage) across 120 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06. The program has reached 3 Final Fours.
