Western Carolina's basketball program dates to 1930, and the Cullowhee, North Carolina school competes in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts play in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The Catamounts name refers to the eastern cougar (catamount), which historically roamed the mountains of western North Carolina.
Winning the 1996 Southern Conference Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, the program's most celebrated postseason achievement.
Western Carolina's campus in Cullowhee sits in a valley in the Great Smoky Mountains at over 2,000 feet elevation, making it one of the most secluded and scenic Division I settings in the country.
