Campbell's basketball program started in 1926 at the Baptist university in Buies Creek, North Carolina. The Fighting Camels compete in the CAA (formerly Big South) and have produced occasional conference success. The program is known for its unique mascot.
The Fighting Camels nickname dates to the 1930s — Campbell's teams were the Hornets until 1934 — and campus legend traces it to early patron Zachary Taylor Kivett, who told founder J.A. Campbell after a devastating campus fire, 'Your name's Campbell; then get a hump on you!'
Winning the 1992 Big South Conference Tournament to earn the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Campbell has one of the most distinctive mascot names in college sports — the Fighting Camels — and the tiny town of Buies Creek has a population of about 3,000, making it one of the smallest D-I college towns.
The Campbell Fighting Camels compete in the CAA and hold an all-time record of 612–820 (.427 winning percentage) across 48 recorded seasons dating back to 1977-78.
