Georgetown played its first basketball game on February 9, 1907, defeating Virginia 22-11. The 'Hoya' name derives from the college cheer 'Hoya Saxa,' a mix of Greek and Latin roughly meaning 'what rocks' — a nod to the school's stone walls. John Thompson made history in 1984 as the first African-American coach to win an NCAA Championship, led by the dominant Patrick Ewing.
