South Dakota State's basketball program dates to 1907, and the Jackrabbits have become a Summit League powerhouse. SDSU made the transition from Division II to Division I in 2004 and quickly became one of the conference's elite programs.
The Jackrabbits nickname was adopted in 1907 after a newspaper reporter wrote that the team was "quick as jackrabbits" — the white-tailed jackrabbit is native to the South Dakota prairie.
Reaching the 2022 NCAA Tournament after a school-record 30-4 season in which the Jackrabbits went a perfect 21-0 against Summit League opponents and carried the nation's longest winning streak at 21 games.
The Jackrabbits have dominated the Summit League since joining Division I, and their rivalry with North Dakota State is one of the fiercest in all of mid-major basketball.
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits compete in the Summit League and hold an all-time record of 403–274 (.595 winning percentage) across 21 recorded seasons dating back to 2005-06.
