Towson's basketball program has competed in Division I since 1979, and the Baltimore-area school competes in the Coastal Athletic Association. The Tigers have steadily improved in recent decades, becoming a competitive force in the CAA.
The Tigers nickname grew out of a student-led campaign in the early 1960s; the Student Senate voted the Tiger the official mascot in November 1962, and 'Mr. Tiger' made his debut at the 1963 Homecoming parade.
Winning the 1990 East Coast Conference title to earn the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, where the 16th-seeded Tigers battled top-ranked Oklahoma in the first round.
Towson is the second-largest university in the University System of Maryland and is located just north of Baltimore, giving it access to one of the most passionate basketball markets on the East Coast.
The Towson Tigers compete in the CAA and hold an all-time record of 626–780 (.445 winning percentage) across 46 recorded seasons dating back to 1979-80.
