UConn Huskies basketball — program history

Connecticut played its first organized basketball game on February 8, 1901, a 17-12 win against Willimantic High School. The 'Huskies' name was adopted in 1934 via student poll, possibly a play on the Yukon/UConn homophone. UConn has won six NCAA championships — more than any school since the tournament expanded to 64 teams — and is the only university whose men's and women's basketball teams have both won national titles in the same year. Under Dan Hurley, UConn won back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, going undefeated in tournament play by double digits both years.

The name

Adopted in 1934 via student poll after the school's name changed from Connecticut Agricultural College; the Yukon/UConn homophone may have influenced the choice

Signature moment

Winning back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2024 under Dan Hurley, with all 12 tournament wins coming by double digits

UConn is 6-0 in NCAA Championship games — a perfect record in title contests — and is the only school where both men's and women's basketball teams won national titles in the same year

The UConn Huskies compete in the Big East and hold an all-time record of 1821–1014 (.642 winning percentage) across 119 recorded seasons dating back to 1900-01. The program has won 6 NCAA national championships (1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024) and reached 7 Final Fours.
