Xavier's basketball program dates to 1920, and the Cincinnati school has become one of the most successful programs in the country, rising from mid-major roots to the Big East in 2013. The Musketeers have made 30 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Elite Eight multiple times.
The Musketeers name was adopted in 1925, inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Three Musketeers" — fitting for Xavier, a Jesuit school named after St. Francis Xavier.
Reaching the 2017 Elite Eight under coach Chris Mack, capping a stretch of consistent NCAA Tournament success that included 10 appearances in 12 years.
Xavier's rivalry with crosstown Cincinnati is known as the "Crosstown Shootout" and is one of the most heated rivalries in college basketball — the schools are just four miles apart.
The Xavier Musketeers compete in the Big East and hold an all-time record of 1648–1116 (.596 winning percentage) across 105 recorded seasons dating back to 1919-20.
