Army Black Knights basketball — program history
Army's basketball program dates to 1903 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. The Black Knights compete in the Patriot League and have a proud basketball tradition, especially in the mid-20th century. Bob Knight coached at Army before launching his legendary run at Indiana.
The name
The Black Knights nickname references the black, gold, and gray uniforms worn by Army cadets, evoking the image of medieval armored knights riding into battle.
Signature moment
The 1968-69 season when Army's Mike Krzyzewski played point guard, before he returned to West Point as head coach in 1975 and launched his Hall of Fame career.
Every cadet at West Point is required to play a sport, giving Army one of the most athletically engaged student bodies in Division I athletics.
The Army Black Knights compete in the Patriot League and hold an all-time record of 1332–1367 (.494 winning percentage) across 124 recorded seasons dating back to 1902-03.
