Bucknell Bison basketball — program history
Bucknell's basketball program dates to 1896 at the private university in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The Bison compete in the Patriot League and have produced some of the conference's most memorable NCAA Tournament moments. The program has won multiple Patriot League titles.
The name
The Bison nickname was adopted in 1923, replacing 'Orange and Blue,' chosen because the American bison represents strength and the rugged spirit of central Pennsylvania.
Signature moment
Upsetting third-seeded Kansas 64-63 in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, one of the biggest upsets in March Madness history.
Bucknell's Sojka Pavilion was named after former president Gary Sojka, and the 2005 Kansas upset was the first of back-to-back first-round NCAA wins — they also beat Arkansas in 2006.
The Bucknell Bison compete in the Patriot League and hold an all-time record of 1531–1356 (.530 winning percentage) across 131 recorded seasons dating back to 1895-96.
