Central Arkansas Bears basketball — program history

Central Arkansas' basketball program began around 1920 in Conway, Arkansas. The Bears transitioned from Division II to Division I in 2006 and joined the ASUN Conference. UCA was a small-college power before making the jump, reaching back-to-back NAIA national championship games in 1991 and 1992 before moving up through Division II.

The name

The Bears nickname was adopted in the early days of the university, representing the strength and determination associated with the black bears native to Arkansas.

Signature moment

Scottie Pippen's collegiate career at Central Arkansas in the mid-1980s, where the future NBA legend developed from a walk-on manager into an All-Conference player.

NBA legend Scottie Pippen played at Central Arkansas, walking on as a freshman equipment manager before growing six inches and becoming a starter — one of the greatest development stories in basketball history.

The Central Arkansas Bears compete in the ASUN and hold an all-time record of 201–408 (.330 winning percentage) across 20 recorded seasons dating back to 2006-07.
