The University of North Florida in Jacksonville competes in the ASUN Conference and has built a competitive basketball program since transitioning to Division I in 2005. The Ospreys have won multiple ASUN regular-season championships and the 2015 ASUN Tournament, earning their lone NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Osprey was chosen as the mascot because the fish-eating bird of prey is commonly found along the waterways near the Jacksonville campus.

North Florida is one of the youngest Division I programs in the state of Florida, having only been founded as a university in 1972.
