Houston Cougars basketball — program history

Houston's basketball program began in 1946 and rose to national prominence through Elvin Hayes and the famous 1968 'Game of the Century' — a nationally televised upset of top-ranked UCLA before 50,000 fans in the Astrodome. The Cougars reached their apex as 'Phi Slama Jama' from 1982-1984, featuring Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler in an explosive, dunk-heavy attack. The nickname, coined by a Houston Post writer after a game with 29 dunks, captured an era. Houston is still chasing its first NCAA Championship, having reached seven Final Fours and lost national title games in 1983, 1984, and 2025 — the last a 65-63 heartbreaker against Florida.

The name

Named by former head coach John Bender, who brought the 'Cougars' name from his previous job at Washington State because of his fondness for the animal

Signature moment

The 'Phi Slama Jama' era (1982-84) featuring Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, with three consecutive Final Four appearances and a style that changed basketball forever

The Cougar Paw hand sign originated from an insult: in 1953, live mascot Shasta lost a toe in a cage door accident, and Texas students mocked UH by folding their thumbs — Houston fans later embraced the gesture as their own

The Houston Cougars compete in the Big 12 and hold an all-time record of 1437–853 (.628 winning percentage) across 75 recorded seasons dating back to 1950-51. The program has reached 7 Final Fours.
