Texas Tech's basketball program began in 1925, and the 'Red Raiders' name was coined by a sports editor in 1936, inspired by the team's all-red uniforms and demanding schedule. The school has two mascots: the Masked Rider, a horseback tradition since 1936, and Raider Red, a costumed cowboy created in 1971 when opposing schools banned live horses. Texas Tech reached the 2019 NCAA Championship game in a thrilling overtime loss to Virginia, marking the program's greatest run. The 'Guns Up' hand sign, introduced in the 1970s, has become one of college sports' most recognizable gestures.
Sports editor Collier Parrish coined 'Red Raiders' in 1936 for the team's all-red uniforms; the Masked Rider tradition began that same year with 'ghost riders' circling the field
Reaching the 2019 NCAA Championship game under Chris Beard, the program's first-ever title game appearance, falling to Virginia in overtime
The first Raider Red mascot head was built from chicken wire and papier-mache and was so lightweight it could have doubled as a pinata — a new head was built every season until the 1990s
The Texas Tech Red Raiders compete in the Big 12 and hold an all-time record of 1528–1156 (.569 winning percentage) across 99 recorded seasons dating back to 1925-26. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
