TCU has played basketball since 1909, and the 'Horned Frogs' nickname — which actually refers to the Texas horned lizard — predates the university's current name, having been adopted in 1897. The school won ten Southwest Conference titles in its history and has been a member of the Big 12 since 2012. In 2022, TCU won its first NCAA Tournament game since 1987, signaling a resurgence for the program. SuperFrog, the costumed mascot since 1979, was named one of Sports Illustrated's Top 25 College Mascots.
Named for the Texas horned lizard (commonly called a 'horned frog') in 1897, a year before the school was even named TCU; legend says the campus was covered with the creatures
The 2022 NCAA Tournament victory over Seton Hall, the program's first tournament win in 35 years, signaling TCU basketball's return to relevance
The Texas horned lizard can shoot blood up to five feet from its eyes as a defense mechanism — fitting for one of college sports' most unique mascots
The TCU Horned Frogs compete in the Big 12 and hold an all-time record of 1355–1497 (.475 winning percentage) across 112 recorded seasons dating back to 1913-14.
