The University of New Orleans competes in the Southland Conference and represents the Crescent City in Division I basketball. The Privateers have produced competitive teams and benefit from the rich basketball culture of New Orleans.
The Privateers name honors the privateers and pirates who sailed the Gulf of Mexico and frequented New Orleans in the 18th and 19th centuries, including the legendary Jean Lafitte.
The 1992-93 season, when the Privateers went 26-4, won the Sun Belt regular-season championship, and earned an at-large NCAA Tournament bid, a high-water mark for the New Orleans program.
The University of New Orleans's Lakefront Arena has hosted major events including NBA preseason games, making it a versatile venue beyond college basketball.
The New Orleans Privateers compete in the Southland and hold an all-time record of 756–695 (.521 winning percentage) across 49 recorded seasons dating back to 1975-76.
