Southern Utah Thunderbirds basketball — program history

Southern Utah's basketball program dates to 1964, and the Cedar City school competes in the WAC. The Thunderbirds have been competitive in their conference and play in one of the most scenic settings in college basketball.

The name

The Thunderbirds name draws from Native American mythology of the Southwest, where the thunderbird is a powerful supernatural creature associated with storms and strength.

Signature moment

Winning the 2001 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament to earn the program's only NCAA Tournament appearance.

Southern Utah's campus in Cedar City sits at 5,800 feet elevation near Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, giving it one of the most scenic settings of any Division I program.

The Southern Utah Thunderbirds compete in the WAC and hold an all-time record of 497–630 (.441 winning percentage) across 37 recorded seasons dating back to 1988-89.
