UT Arlington's basketball program dates to 1959, and the school is among the largest universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex by enrollment. The Mavericks compete in the Western Athletic Conference and have had occasional conference success.
The Mavericks name was adopted by student vote in 1971, replacing the Rebels nickname that had drawn criticism for its Confederate associations; a maverick — an unbranded steer — reflects the independent, untamed spirit of Texas ranching culture.
Winning the 2008 Southland Conference Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, the program's most recent March Madness appearance.
