UAlbany's basketball program dates to 1909, and the school completed its climb from Division III through Division II to Division I in 1999. Competing in the America East Conference, the Great Danes quickly became competitive at the D-I level.
The Great Danes name was adopted in 1965, replacing "Pedagogues." The Great Dane breed was chosen for its size, strength, and regal bearing.
Reaching the 2006 and 2007 NCAA Tournaments in consecutive years, marking the program's emergence as a legitimate Division I contender.
UAlbany made a remarkably quick transition from Division III to Division I relevance, earning NCAA Tournament bids within just a few years of becoming eligible for postseason play.
