Alcorn State's basketball program dates to around 1930 at the oldest public HBCU in Mississippi. The Braves compete in the SWAC and have had periods of strong conference play. Davey Whitney coached the program for nearly three decades and built it into a SWAC contender.
The Braves nickname was chosen to represent courage and warrior spirit, reflecting the university's fighting determination as a historically Black institution.
