Eastern Washington's basketball program dates to 1901 in Cheney, Washington. The Eagles compete in the Big Sky Conference and have won multiple conference championships. The program is known for its distinctive red basketball court.
The Eagles nickname was adopted in the 1920s, representing the bald eagles common in the Pacific Northwest's forests and waterways.

Eastern Washington's Roos Field features a bright red football turf nicknamed 'The Inferno' — the only red playing surface in college football and one of the most distinctive in all of sports — while the basketball Eagles call neighboring Reese Court home.
