Florida's basketball program started in 1915 but spent decades in football's shadow before Billy Donovan transformed it into a national power after arriving in 1996. The 'Gators' nickname was chosen in 1911 as an homage to the alligators native to the Everglades region. Under Donovan, Florida became the first team to repeat as national champions with the same starting lineup, winning back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007. The Gators added a third title in 2025, and remain the only school to have won both football and basketball national championships in the same year (2007).
Adopted by the team in 1911 as a nod to the alligators native to the state of Florida
Winning back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2006 and 2007 with the same starting five — the first team ever to repeat with an identical starting lineup, and the first repeat champion of any kind since Duke in 1991-92
Florida is the only school to win both football and basketball national championships in the same calendar year, accomplishing the feat in 2007
The Florida Gators compete in the SEC and hold an all-time record of 1589–1191 (.572 winning percentage) across 103 recorded seasons dating back to 1920-21. The program has won 3 NCAA national championships (2006, 2007, 2025) and reached 6 Final Fours.
