Mississippi State competes in the SEC and has built a reputation for tough defensive basketball, particularly under coach Rick Ray and later Ben Howland. The Bulldogs have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Final Four in 1996 under Richard Williams.
The Bulldogs nickname dates back to 1905, and the live mascot tradition began in 1935 when coach Ralph Sasse traveled to Memphis to select the school's first bulldog; the name became official in 1961. The famous cowbell tradition, while more associated with football, extends to basketball fan culture as well.
The 1996 Final Four appearance under coach Richard Williams, the program's deepest NCAA Tournament run, featuring Erick Dampier and Dontae' Jones.
Mississippi State's Humphrey Coliseum is known as "The Hump" and was once one of the toughest road venues in the SEC due to its intimate seating and loud fans.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs compete in the SEC and hold an all-time record of 1540–1299 (.542 winning percentage) across 113 recorded seasons dating back to 1908-09. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
