North Dakota State University in Fargo competes in the Summit League and has transitioned to Division I with notable success. While best known for its dominant football program, the Bison have also made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball.
The Bison (often called Thundering Herd) mascot represents the American bison that once roamed the Great Plains by the millions, a fitting symbol for the Fargo school.
The 2009 NCAA Tournament first-round game against Kansas, the Bison's first appearance in the Big Dance after transitioning to Division I, marking a program milestone.
