Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, competes in the Horizon League and has built a competitive mid-major program. The Golden Grizzlies have made NCAA Tournament appearances and are known for producing upset-minded teams.
The Golden Grizzlies mascot combines the school's gold primary color with the grizzly bear, representing power and ferocity for the suburban Detroit university.
The 2024 NCAA Tournament upset of No. 3 seed Kentucky, when 14-seed Oakland won 80-76 behind Jack Gohlke's 10 three-pointers after claiming its first Horizon League tournament title, announcing the program as one capable of shocking college basketball's biggest names.
Oakland University was founded on land donated by Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of auto pioneer John Dodge, making the campus one of the most scenic in Michigan.
