Pennsylvania Quakers basketball — program history

The University of Pennsylvania competes in the Ivy League and has one of the most successful basketball programs among Ivy schools. The Quakers have won 26 Ivy League titles, second only to Princeton, and have made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 1979 Final Four run.

The name

The Quakers name honors William Penn and the Quaker heritage of Pennsylvania's founding, reflecting the religious and cultural roots of the Commonwealth.

Signature moment

The 1979 Final Four appearance, when the Quakers reached the national semifinals and competed against eventual champion Michigan State and Magic Johnson.

Penn's Palestra is known as the "Cathedral of College Basketball" and has hosted more college basketball games than any other arena in the country, making it a sacred venue in the sport's history.

The Pennsylvania Quakers compete in the Ivy League and hold an all-time record of 1867–1199 (.609 winning percentage) across 124 recorded seasons dating back to 1896-97. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
