Portland State University competes in the Big Sky Conference and represents the city of Portland in Division I basketball. The Vikings have been competitive in the Big Sky and have made occasional postseason appearances.
The Vikings mascot was adopted to represent the Scandinavian heritage of many Pacific Northwest settlers, evoking strength and exploration.
The 2008 Big Sky Tournament title, when Portland State earned the program's first NCAA Tournament berth, then repeated as champions in 2009 for back-to-back appearances.
Portland State is one of the few Division I basketball programs located in the heart of a major city's downtown, with its campus situated in Portland's urban core.
