Purdue University Fort Wayne (formerly IPFW) competes in the Horizon League and has been building its basketball program as a regional university in northeast Indiana. The Mastodons have been increasingly competitive in their conference.
The Mastodons mascot was inspired by the discovery of mastodon fossils near Fort Wayne, Indiana, giving the university a unique and locally meaningful identity.
The competitive Horizon League seasons in the 2010s, as the program established itself as a legitimate conference contender after years of building.
The mastodon fossils discovered near Fort Wayne are displayed at the Indiana State Museum, making Purdue Fort Wayne the only Division I school with a mascot based on a local paleontological discovery.
The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons compete in the Horizon League and hold an all-time record of 368–382 (.491 winning percentage) across 24 recorded seasons dating back to 2002-03.
