Texas A&M, the state's first public university (opened 1876), has fielded basketball teams since around 1912. The 'Aggies' nickname reflects the school's agricultural roots, formally adopted in the 1920s. Reveille, a dog the school's first live mascot since 1931, is the highest-ranking member of the Corps of Cadets and tradition holds that if she barks in class, the professor should dismiss the students. The basketball program experienced a surge under Billy Gillispie in 2007, spending most of the season in the top 10 and becoming the first Big 12 South team to win at Kansas.
The 'Aggies' name reflects the school's agricultural origins; mascot Reveille — a stray dog hit by cadets' car in 1931 — got her name when she barked at the morning bugle call

Reveille holds the rank of five-diamond general in the Corps of Cadets, outranking every student including the Corps commander, and tradition says if she falls asleep on a cadet's bed, the cadet must sleep elsewhere
The Texas A&M Aggies compete in the SEC and hold an all-time record of 1567–1359 (.536 winning percentage) across 114 recorded seasons dating back to 1912-13. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
