Texas Southern's basketball program dates to 1947, and the Houston HBCU has been one of the most successful programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers have won numerous SWAC titles and made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Tigers nickname was adopted as a symbol of power and pride for the historically Black university in Houston's Third Ward.
Winning the 2022 First Four game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to advance to the NCAA Tournament proper, continuing the program's tradition of March appearances.
Texas Southern has one of the most active NCAA Tournament résumés among HBCUs, earning bids regularly and representing the SWAC in March Madness year after year.
