UNC Greensboro's basketball program dates to 1968, and the Spartans compete in the Southern Conference. UNCG has built a solid program that has earned multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and consistently competes for SoCon titles.
The Spartans nickname was adopted when the school began its athletics program, chosen for the ancient Greek warriors' discipline and competitive spirit.
Winning the 2018 Southern Conference Tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, the program's first in 17 years, under coach Wes Miller.
Wes Miller, who played on North Carolina's 2005 national championship team, built UNCG into a Southern Conference power before leaving to become head coach at Cincinnati in 2021.
The UNC Greensboro Spartans compete in the Southern and hold an all-time record of 538–541 (.499 winning percentage) across 35 recorded seasons dating back to 1991-92.
