UTRGV's basketball program traces its roots to 1968 through predecessor institutions UT Pan American and UT Brownsville. The Edinburg, Texas school competes in the Southland Conference and serves one of the most diverse student populations in the country.
The Vaqueros name honors the Mexican cowboys (vaqueros) who worked ranches along the Rio Grande Valley, reflecting the region's deep ranching heritage.
Winning the 1963 NAIA national championship as Pan American College, beating Western Carolina 73-62 in the final behind tournament MVP Lucious Jackson.
UTRGV is one of the youngest university consolidations in the country, formed in 2015 by merging UT Pan American and UT Brownsville, and serves the heavily Hispanic Rio Grande Valley region.
The UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros compete in the Southland and hold an all-time record of 706–941 (.429 winning percentage) across 58 recorded seasons dating back to 1968-69.
