Colorado State's basketball program dates to 1897 in Fort Collins and the Rams compete in the Mountain West Conference. The program has made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and was especially competitive in the 2010s-2020s. CSU has produced several NBA players.
The Rams nickname was adopted in the early 1900s, inspired by the bighorn sheep native to the Rocky Mountains surrounding Fort Collins.
The 2013 NCAA Tournament run under coach Larry Eustachy, where the Rams earned a tournament bid after an impressive Mountain West season.
Colorado State's Moby Arena, dedicated in 1966, earned its nickname when a student sportswriter compared the hump-shaped building to the whale from Moby-Dick — 'Moby Gym' stuck, and the name was made official decades later — its loud atmosphere has made it one of the toughest road games in the Mountain West.
The Colorado State Rams compete in the MWC and hold an all-time record of 1418–1350 (.512 winning percentage) across 122 recorded seasons dating back to 1901-02.
