San Diego State's basketball program dates to 1921, and the Aztecs have become one of the premier mid-major programs in the country. Under Steve Fisher and then Brian Dutcher, SDSU became a perennial NCAA Tournament team known for suffocating defense.
The Aztecs name was adopted in 1925, chosen to honor the ancient Aztec civilization and reflect the region's connection to Mesoamerican heritage.
Reaching the 2023 NCAA Championship game as a 5-seed, the program's first-ever title game appearance, behind Lamont Butler's buzzer-beating semifinal winner against FAU.
Viejas Arena, the Aztecs' home court, is known as one of the toughest places to play in college basketball — SDSU posted a remarkable home winning percentage under Steve Fisher and Brian Dutcher.
The San Diego State Aztecs compete in the MWC and hold an all-time record of 974–735 (.570 winning percentage) across 57 recorded seasons dating back to 1969-70. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
