Davidson's basketball program began in 1909 at the small liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina. The Wildcats are best known for Stephen Curry's transcendent run in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and Lefty Driesell's coaching tenure in the 1960s. Davidson competes in the Atlantic 10 and consistently punches above its weight.
The Wildcats nickname was adopted in the early 1900s, representing the fierce, scrappy nature of the small school's athletic teams.
Stephen Curry's 2008 NCAA Tournament run, scoring 40 points against Gonzaga and leading the 10th-seeded Wildcats to the Elite Eight, captivating the nation.
Davidson's enrollment is only about 2,000 students, making it the smallest school to reach the Elite Eight in the modern NCAA Tournament era — and Curry's No. 30 jersey is retired there.
The Davidson Wildcats compete in the A-10 and hold an all-time record of 1585–1311 (.547 winning percentage) across 116 recorded seasons dating back to 1908-09.
