Saint Joseph's basketball program dates to 1909, and the Philadelphia school is one of the city's "Big Five" programs. The Hawks reached legendary status with the 2003-04 team that started 27-0 and was ranked No. 1, led by Jameer Nelson.
The Hawks nickname was adopted in 1929 through a student contest run by yearbook editor Charlie Dunn — the winning entry, submitted by baseball player John Gallagher, narrowly beat out 'Grenadiers' in the final vote and was said to typify the fighting spirit of the school's crimson and gray athletes.
The 2003-04 season, when Jameer Nelson led the Hawks to a 27-0 start and a No. 1 ranking, captivating the nation before a late-season loss to Xavier.
The famous "Hawk" mascot at Saint Joseph's must flap its wings continuously throughout every basketball game without stopping — a tradition that has continued since 1956.
The Saint Joseph's Hawks compete in the A-10 and hold an all-time record of 1750–1243 (.585 winning percentage) across 116 recorded seasons dating back to 1909-10.
