Duquesne's basketball program dates to 1914 at the Catholic university in Pittsburgh. The Dukes were a national power in the 1930s-50s, winning the 1955 NIT Championship and producing NBA players like Sihugo Green and Dick Ricketts. The program competes in the Atlantic 10.
The Dukes nickname honors the French Marquis de Duquesne, the colonial governor for whom the original Fort Duquesne (later Pittsburgh) was named.

Duquesne's campus sits on a bluff overlooking downtown Pittsburgh, and the university's UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse — renamed in 2021 to honor Chuck Cooper, the first Black player drafted into the NBA — has one of the most dramatic urban backdrops of any D-I arena.
The Duquesne Dukes compete in the A-10 and hold an all-time record of 1514–1225 (.553 winning percentage) across 109 recorded seasons dating back to 1913-14.
