East Carolina's basketball program dates to 1909 in Greenville, North Carolina. The Pirates compete in the AAC and have made multiple NCAA and NIT appearances. The program has been competitive in its various conference affiliations throughout its history.
The Pirates nickname was adopted in 1934, inspired by the Blackbeard and other pirates who once sailed the waters off North Carolina's Outer Banks coastline.
Winning the 1993 CAA Tournament to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 21 years, one of the program's most exciting March Madness moments.
ECU's Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum is located in Greenville, which is just 90 miles from the coast where Blackbeard the pirate met his end in 1718.
The East Carolina Pirates compete in the AAC and hold an all-time record of 759–964 (.441 winning percentage) across 62 recorded seasons dating back to 1964-65.
