USF's basketball program launched in 1971, when the Golden Brahmans won their debut 74-73 at Stetson. The 'Bulls' name was chosen to represent strength and the cattle ranching heritage of Central Florida. The program's history includes stretches of strong play in the American Athletic Conference and Conference USA, with several postseason appearances. Under Amir Abdur-Rahim, USF won the 2024 American regular-season title but was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament; after his sudden death in October 2024, the Bulls swept the 2026 American regular-season and tournament titles under Bryan Hodgson and earned a No. 11 seed, with veteran coach Chris Mack taking over that spring.
