Charlotte's basketball program began in 1965 and quickly rose to prominence under coach Lee Rose, reaching the Final Four in 1977. The 49ers compete in AAC (formerly Conference USA) and have made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. The program produced NBA star Cedric Maxwell.
The 49ers nickname was chosen by student vote in 1961 to honor 1949, the year Bonnie Cone saved the school from closure and helped transform it into Charlotte College — though the miner mascot also nods to the Charlotte area's gold mining past, home to America's first documented gold discovery in 1799.
Reaching the 1977 Final Four under coach Lee Rose, led by Cedric 'Cornbread' Maxwell, just 12 years after the program was founded.
Charlotte was the site of the first documented gold find in America in 1799, and the 49ers play in a city that was once the center of American gold mining, predating the California Gold Rush by 50 years.
The Charlotte 49ers compete in the AAC and hold an all-time record of 878–740 (.543 winning percentage) across 54 recorded seasons dating back to 1972-73. The program has reached 1 Final Four.
