Wichita State's basketball program dates to 1905, and the Shockers have been one of the most successful mid-major programs in college basketball history. Under coach Gregg Marshall, Wichita State went undefeated in the regular season in 2013-14 and reached the 2013 Final Four.
The "Shockers" name dates to 1904 when student-athletes worked in wheat fields "shocking" (bundling) wheat to earn money — WuShock, the wheat-headed mascot, embodies this heritage.
Reaching the 2013 Final Four under Gregg Marshall, upsetting Gonzaga and Ohio State en route and establishing Wichita State as one of the elite programs outside the power conferences.
Wichita State's 2013-14 team went 34-0 before losing in the NCAA Tournament, finishing with the best regular-season record in the country and proving mid-majors could go wire-to-wire undefeated.
The Wichita State Shockers compete in the AAC and hold an all-time record of 1714–1290 (.571 winning percentage) across 119 recorded seasons dating back to 1905-06. The program has reached 2 Final Fours.
